Why should I register my nickname and how do I do it?
Registering your nickname on GeekShed provides a number of benefits. The most notable of these is that registering your nickname prevents other people from using it. Once a user starts using the nickname, they will be asked to ‘identify’ to it with a password. If they fail to do so, their nickname will be changed. This helps to stop people posing as you.
Once you register your nickname, you can be added to the auto voice and op lists in other people’s channels. This enables you to be a permanent staff member in channels. You are also entitled to a vhost once you have been registered for 90 days.
Registration provides you with many benefits and is completely free.
To register your nickname on GeekShed, you must first be using it. If you are not currently using it, change to it with the command:
/nick <nickname>
For example:
/nick CrazyUser
Once you are using the nickname, you may register it in one of two ways. If you’re using GeekShed’s Flash client, register your nick from the “Options” menu at the top of the window. In most other clients, use the following command:
/ns register <password> <e-mail>
Note that some older clients do not recognize the abbreviated /ns syntax. Instead you must type out the full command:
/msg nickserv register <password> <e-mail>
For example:
/ns register supersecretpassword crazyuser@hotmail.com
Following this, you will be sent an e-mail giving you the details required to finish off the registration. Follow the instructions in the e-mail.
Each time you connect and start using the registered, you will be told that “This nick is owned by someone else”. You must ‘identify’ to it using the following command:
/ns identify <password>
For example:
/ns identify supersecretpassword
If you use mIRC, you can load the following script into the Remotes section of your script editor (press alt+R to access this) to identify you automatically. Just replace ‘YOURPASSWORDHERE’ with your actual password:
on 1:NOTICE:*This nickname is registered and protected*:?: {
if ($nick == NickServ) {
ns identify YOURPASSWORDHERE
}
}on 1:NOTICE:*This nick is owned by someone else*:?: {
if ($nick == NickServ) {
ns identify YOURPASSWORDHERE
}
}

Registering nick not working …. getting “unknown command” attempting the /ns register command in pidgin. I’ve done this successfully in other IRCs.

Some IRC clients will not allow the /ns command shortcuts. Try typing out the full command:
/msg nickserv register
If that doesn’t work, come ask for assistance in #help.

Worked perfectly – thanks!!

I do not understand how to register my nickname at all, nothing above (about registering my nickname) makes any sense to me… it it a safari problem? Or am I just too stupid?
sigh

Safari is your web browser. You may be using it with a web client to get to IRC, but it’s hard to know for sure. If you’re still having trouble, come ask for assistance in #help.

I’m lost, too. I don’t think we are too stupid, Maribeth. We’re just not quite geeky enough to be able to follow rules written in a language (computer code) we don’t speak! :)
For example, WHERE do I type these commands? WHERE is #help?

Emelle,
Without some information about how you are connecting to GeekShed, I cannot give you very specific details. Generally speaking, you type the commands wherever you type what you say on GeekShed. Usually there is an area for typing at the bottom of the window, just like you’d see for IMs.
The command to join #help is /join #help

figured it out… I went back to what looks like a chat room; clicking on “options” allowed me to “register” my nick… received the confirmation email and THEN copy-pasted all that hooey into the CHAT bar (like you said, “wherever you type what you say”) and got “emelle” registered as my nickname.
So for anyone like myself and Maribeth, who are not quite geeky enough to read code, and figure we have to type whatever in the ADDRESS bar (or in the SEARCH engine) or wherever else we can find to type it, go BACK to the chat room! enter the info as if it’s conversation! it’ll lead you right where you want to be!
yay!
{I found the GeekShed by way of the “Community” link on Geek&Sundry’s website}

Have followed above instructions re registering my nickname. Yet to receive confirmation e-mail. How long does it take?
April 3, 2012 - 1:07 am
The confirmation should mail out without much delay. Check your spam folder, and if you cannot find it, come visit us in #help. A member of network staff can check the email address you used for typos and reset the registration so you can try it again if necessary.
